Praying Scripture


Seasons come and seasons go. Some are easy to bear; while others kick us when we’re already down. For every moment in between this swinging pendulum of life, there is one steadfast: God. His faithfulness never changes, nor does the truth found in His Word (the Bible). And so we seek it out like treasure-hunters; like ravished people; like those lost in the desert for long days.

When our own words fail, His Word resounds with wisdom, hope and grace. Inhale its truths, exhale its praise. The same God who ordained these scriptures faithfully, is faithful to answer them still. Yes. Faithful to 2000 year old promises that apply even today. See?

1393617_606196386104393_1961259318_n Longing for a child: 1 Samuel 1:10-11, In bitterness of soul Hannah wept much and prayed to the LORD. And she made a vow, saying, “O LORD Almighty, if you will only look upon your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.”

Waiting: Psalm 13, How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and every day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me? Look on me and answer, O LORD my God. Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death; my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,” and my foes will rejoice when I fall. But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing to the LORD, for he has been good to me.

Desperation: All of Psalm 61, Psalm 143

Fearful: 2 Chronicles 14:11, Then Asa called to the LORD his God and said, “LORD, there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us, O LORD our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this vast army. O LORD, you are our God; do not let man prevail against you.”

Thanks: Revelation 7:11-12,  All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying: “Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!”

Psalm 7:17: I will give thanks to the LORD because of his righteousness and will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.

Acts 7:59-60, While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”  Then he fell on his knees and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he fell asleep.

Luke 18:13, “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’

Glorifying God: Habakkuk 3:1-19, LORD, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, O LORD. Renew them in our day, in our time make them known;  in wrath remember mercy.

Jude 1:24-25, To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.

Daniel 2:20-23 , Then Daniel praised the God of heaven and said:  “Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. He changes times and seasons; he sets up kings and deposes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. He reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with him. I thank and praise you, O God of my fathers: You have given me wisdom and power, you have made known to me what we asked of you,  you have made known to us the dream of the king.”

Depression & anxiety: Psalm 94:19, Unless the LORD had given me help, I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death. When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your love, O LORD, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul.

1005003_603465479710817_1094700934_n For others: Ephesians 3:14-21, For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being,  so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love,  may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

Numbers 6:24-26: The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.

Anytime, all the time: Matthew 6:9-13, “This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,  your kingdom come, your will be done  on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts,  as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

  7. Thanks you for today’s devotion and your verse’s on your blog. I was really struggling for the past few days. We have been in a season with our son, and when it goes on this long, you start to question your faith. It has been so long and difficult and we keep searching for the good that comes out of these seasons, and every once in a while we see a glimmer of hope, yet that seems to be followed by days of things turning upside down. Your blog gives me hope to stay steadfast in God’s word when I want to give up. I examine my heart to see if there is anything still there that is preventing God from working? I am so grateful for reading your blog that God put before me when I truly needed to hear those words. Thank you!

    “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from The Lord,

  13. Psalm 130: 7, 8

    7 O Israel (Melissa), hope in the Lord;
    for with the Lord there is unfailing love.
    His redemption overflows.

    from every kind of sin.

  14. Isaiah 41:9b & 10

    You are my servant (child). I have chosen you and have not rejected you. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand. NIV

    missed reading this morning. I was overwhelmed with awe and
    thanksgiving because the Lord used your message to speak directly

    “God can reverse, restore, revive, and renew.”

  17. Psalm 27 (whole thing, but here are a few key verses)

    1 The LORD is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid?
    3 Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then will I be confident.
    5 For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of tabernacle and set me high upon a rock.
    7 Hear my voice when I call, O LORD; be merciful to me and answer me.
    8 My heart says of you, “Seek his face!” Your face, LORD, I will seek.
    14 Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.

  18. John 3:16. “For God so loved the world, he gave his only son, that whosoever believes in him shall not perish, but have everlasting life”. My favorite verse that I memorized around the age of 7 years old.

  19. For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV)

  20. Ps. 107:16 for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron. NOTHING is too hard for my Jesus!! So grateful!

  23. I read your devotional Samantha and I would so benefit from a copy of “Encouragement for Today: Devotionals for Everyday Life.” Slippery Friendships was me not too long ago. All the warning signs were there, but I just did not listen to what anyone said, and I was far away from GOD at the time. I am steadfastly remaining as faithful as can be in the midst of a storm, and I know it isn’t easy. But I have to believe that GOD will get me through it. I believed that by myself I could guard myself, but my heart like Jeremiah said: The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” Jeremiah 17:9 (NIV), was in fact deceitful. However, it got me caught in a stickier situation than that of Mia and her coworker. Had I listened to GOD, and came back to GOD sooner, I may be in a better place right now. BUT that is not the case, and with time, GOD heals. So again, Samantha, thank you for sharing your devotional. It speaks to me. And I hope it speaks to others before it gets to the point of “too late.” It never has to be to late, if we remain steadfast in GOD.
