Making Our Way Toward Peace

I once lugged a brand spankin’ new boyfriend to the ballet. I know, I know … not the optimal way to woo him. But he dragged me to college football games. All’s fair in love and war, eh?

Eventually I warmed to the beauty of football, but he never took a liking to dance. Which seems odd as football is a dance of sorts. {That’s an analogy for another day.} My point in telling this tale of love lost {we broke up} and love found {I count the days till the next football season starts} is that I love dance. All forms except one.

I don’t dig the dance we do with our thoughts.

True, some thoughts gracefully glide us across the dance floor of life. Warm memories, kind words, happy encouragements.

But other thoughts? Those that steal our peace … like we’re not as pretty as so-and-so. Or as bright as smarty-pants PhD. How about the thought that life will forever be hard? Or that loneliness, depression, anxiety, {fill in the blank} is our lot in life.

I danced with this one for years: I’ll always be fearful.

In hindsight, that feels melodramatic. But I spent years in the absence of peace because I was afraid. Negative thoughts swung me around till I got sick of being frightened and tired of having no peace.

Maybe you’re exhausted from being haunted by a negative thought too? You think, “Something’s gotta give.” You’re to the point you can’t dance another day, but you don’t want to be left hanging on the dance floor. That’s when we need something else to step in and replace our {_____}.

I wish I had an oh-so-fab 10 Steps to Peace Program. I don’t. But I’ll tell you what’s helped me end fear’s dance.

Prayer… asking God to help set me free.

Counseling… talking the dark thoughts out into the light {helped a ton!}

Music… consuming worship music filled my soul with hope.

The Bible… Every time fear grasped my hand for a spin, I shook it off with a scripture, repeating positive truths over and over.

When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your unfailing love, LORD, supported me.
When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy. ~Psalm 94:18-19

I’ll be honest. Changing dance partners wasn’t the easiest. Negative thoughts break-danced and cha-cha’ed around my knocking knees. I had to fight them off in order to dance with peace. But over time and through prayer, counseling, worship and determined focus on Scripture the negative thoughts have lessened and peace has increased.

Can I encourage you to try a combo or all four of these to help you shake {_____} too?

My go to peace verse is Hebrews 12:2-3 “Fix our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and … endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. ” If I focus on Jesus, and not my circumstances, He always will show me the way. Whatever I am going through, He endured worse – for me. Why? So that I “will not grow weary and lose heart” This really puts my worries into perspective, and I don’t want to let down Jesus with my weariness and mopy heart. I pray that his verse speaks to you as well.

  2. Beth Terry says:

A calm and undisturbed mind and heart are the life and health of the body….Proverbs 14:30 (AMP)
We read to know we are not alone—thank you for encouraging me this morning.

  3. I really appreciate your devotion. This week & last I feel like several of the P31 devotions have been written just for my situation-that is totally of God! I have to admit that I don’t have a specific verse that I go to for peace. You have encouraged me to dig into scripture & find some because right now peace is not really reigning in my heart as it should be. Marriage troubles, health troubles & more do not bring peace about~but as I read your devotion I realized that despite all the extremely difficult circumstances I can still have peace in my heart. Thank you so much, God has used you today in my life.
    ~Blessings~
PS: Thank you for a chance for the giveaway-the book sounds like it was written for me:)

  4. Teresa T. says:

I have a natural tendancy to be anxious. When I feel I need to be reassured that God is in control and won’t allow anything in my life that isn’t a part of His will, I remember the words in Philippians 4:6,7 “Do not worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks. And God’s peace, which is so great we cannot understand it, will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Another one I think of is Psalm 3:5,6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don’t depend on your own understanding. Remember the Lord in all you do, and He will give you success.” The final one to share is Romans 8:28 ” We know that in everything God works for the good of those who love Him. They are the people He called, because that was His plan.”
I have some dear friends and family members who need to experience His peace at this season in their lives. I am praying that God will give them His peace, love and comfort. Thanks for reminding me of this today!
    Be blessed! 😀

  5. God bless you sister in christ, wow i just have to say my god is an amazing god this devo couldnt come at a better time. Im a young mother 35 yrs old have a son who’s 18 and some of his choices have lead him to go to jail he’s been there since Dec, 2011 and we were told yesterday that he would have to do 34 months in state prison, and as you know my mind ran wild with questions, doubts, and worries, and then im at work and read today’s devo which i believe was just for me. I read the devo’s every day and i have to say they really do help me get through the day. Just want to say thank you so much.

    • Laura M. says:

      Maria,

I’m sory for whar you are going through. There are some wonderful prison ministries out there. Pray that God will bring the right one in to reach your son. Maybe one day your son will have a ministry of his own ,teaching through what he’s experiencing now. And maybe you’ll be able to comfort another mom who’s going through the same thing. May God continue to give you the strength to find peace and joy in every day.

    • Maria, I have a friend whose son went to prison a few years ago because of poor choices also. His praying mama was very concerned (of course) but she did the best she could to trust God, believe that God was working it all out for good and she continued to pray. Soon her son was calling her and asking if she could give him a scripture, or could she pray with him. Well don’t you know, to make a story short, God met him right there in that prison… and now he is ministering to others!
I am praying for your son and asking God to do exactly that… to meet your son right there in that prison and for Him to give you HIS strength, the comfort that only He can give and HIS peace that passes all understanding. Please Lord do it…in and for the glorious name of Jesus… this boy needs you and so does his mama.

  6. Amanda R says:

I realize after reading this I still have a lot of growing to do in my life. It’s so great to know that I can find mypeace in Him. I found Psalm 4:5 this morning that refreshed my mind. ” I lay down and slept, yet I woke up in safety for the Lord was watching over me.” That for me is peace.

  7. Cheryl Powell says:

Cast all your cares upon the Lord for he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7
This is where I gain my peace, just knowing that God will carry my burdens and worries because he loves me. What a wonderful peaceful feeling to know that my Savior will never leave me nor forsake me.

  8. C Means says:

“…The Lord is faithful to all His promises and loving toward all He has made. The Lord upholds all those who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down. The eyes of all look to You, and You give them their food at the proper time. You open Your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.”
    Psalm 145:13-16 (NIV)

  9. Kathy Heyerly says:

Fear not, I have redeemed you. I don’t know the reference, but I often say that through my day.

  10. Psalm 46:10 — Be still and know that I am God. THis has calmed my soul on almost a daily basis for a year. And then the dance of my thoughts begin again… what if my husband truly does decide to leave me and the girls? What if I can’t pay the bills? What if I don’t find a permanent job (I searched for over a year)? What if he decides to have an affair instead? What if all the other women he flirts with (most of them young) decide to take him up on it or chase him instead? What if I really am a weak, unconfident woman that he doesn’t want to be with? What if God’s answer to my prayers is that my marriage is over? These questions and more plague me through the night, and especially early in the morning hours. God bless you for all you do.

  11. Jeremiah 31:3: “I have loved you with an everlasting love, I have drawn you with lovingkindness.”

  12. When I feel and say I do not have enough courage – that is a lie. God says in 1 Chron. 28:20 “Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Don’t be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, your God, is with you.”

  13. Romans 8:31 What then shall we say in response to this? If God is for us who can be against us? This I find reassuring when I believe it is me against the world. Also I read recently that we can either live in fear or in faith since both involves not knowing the future. I just can’t remember where I read that or who I am quoting but it correlates to a recent change (or attempt to change) in thinking worse case scenario to best cast scenario. Why not when really we don’t know what the next minute will bring more less the next day, month, year, etc. But it does take practice, doesn’t it?

  14. Maria G says:

    2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

  15. Andrea G says:

When I am afraid, I will trust in Him

    and

Those who trust in Him will not be put to shame.

  16. This is actually a scripture that my friend found in her times of trouble and I find myself recalling it often: From the end of the earth will I cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed and fainting; lead me to the rock that is higher than I [yes, a rock that is too high for me].
    Psalm 61:1-3

  17. “Because he loves me.”says the Lord, “I will rescue him, I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
He will call upon me and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. Psalm 91: 14-15

  18. Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and he will direct your pathways. So many times when I’m fearful, I have to repeat, “I will trust you Jesus,” over and over until I calm.

  19. My go to verse is Psalm 121 1-2 I look to the hills where does my help come frome? My help comes from the Lord, Maker of heaven and earth. That has got me through do much in the last few months I just thank God for his Promises.

  20. My go to verse is always Jeremiah 29:11…”For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not harm you. Plans to give you a hope and a future.”

By the way… just LOVE that show (SYTYCD) AND that particular piece that you shared on your blog today… just stunning piece!

    • Just like Melissa, I too go to Jeremiah 29:11-13 “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future…” It reassures me of Who is in control, no matter the situation I may be facing. It encourages me to go on & know that things happen because He has greater plans for us! THANK GOD, AMEN!!!

  21. Thank you for this wonderful devotion. I have been struggling with peace lately and everywhere I turn God is speaking to me to let go and let HIM. Our pastor has preached several sermons on peace lately, we’ve been talking about peace in our youth group, and Proverbs 31 has had a couple of devotionals relating to peace. I’m so thankful I have a God I can go to and He only has my best interet at heart! My favorite bible verse and one that comforts me alot is Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you, and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” What a promise!!!!!!

  22. Melanie Shannon says:

I can do all things in Christ who strengthens me. Phillipians 4:13.

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you or forsake you. Deuteronomy 31:6

  23. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Romans 12:12

  24. I have struggled a lot with fear and anxiety over the years. My favorite go to verse would have to be 2 Timothy 1:7:

“For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of peace, and of love and a sound mind.”

I often say this throughout my day!

Thanks for this wonderful post – it is a great reminder for those of us who are troubled with fear and anxiety!

  25. Jen Clark says:

    Psalm 46:10
    “Be still and know that I Am God;
I will be exalted amont the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth”

  26. Caroline Grossman says:

My verse for this year is Psalm 91:11…it gets rid of the negative thoughts and calms my anxiety!

    Blessings to you, Caroline

  27. I have had panic attacks for years. I’ve longed for peace and freedom. It has been here lately that I have been reading the Bible and actually understanding it!!! Psalm 40:1: I waited for the Lord; and he inclined to me, and heard my cry. He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps. This I know to be true!! Even in stuggles, he is there! Thank you for this devotional!!!!

  28. A great Scripture for me to remember when negative thoughts start to consume me is:

“The LORD will fight for you (me); you (I) need only to be still.” ~ Exodus 14:14

  29. Sheri Galloro says:

Iam Free In-Deed! Walk in His TRUTH!
John 10;10 The thief’s purpose is to steal , kill and destroy. My purpose is to give life in all its fullness.
Loved your message today Thank YOU.

  30. Yvonne S. says:

I have spent my life fearful. Fear of doing or saying the wrong thing. Fear of judgment and fear of rejection. Fearful to trust after being rejected by those who call themselves believers. Fear that God does not want me or love me. Every time the thoughts race and the heart sinks this verse pops into my mind and helps me stay afloat another day.
Jeremiah 29:11-13 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

    • Laura M. says:

Yvonne know that you are not alone. I’ve also spent my life fearful. Afraid of all of the things you mentioned. Sometimes it’s a minute by minute struggle for me to keep going. The enmy wants nothing more than to crush us down with fear. Remember that you are a Precious Child of God and he DOES love you very much!!

  31. I would say my go to verse right now is Psalm 73:26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart, my portion forever.

  32. I have always struggled with having no hope and in the last year found this verse that has really helped me. Jeremiah 29:11 – For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

  33. Laura M. says:

“Fear not, for I have reedemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned: the flames will not set you ablaze. Isaiah 43; 1b-2 NIV. I have been going through a lot of emotional turmoil and been filled with a lot of anxiety lately. It’s been hard to remember these verses, but when I read that God says “You are MIne”, it really gives me peace. the rest is a wonderful added assurance.

I also love Phil. 4:13 and Jere. 29:11.

  34. I am so many times tempted and so many times falling into being anxious and start acting crazy when I do. I need to claim the truth of Scripture, talk it out loud, remember it and memorize it, pray it and believe it then act upon it.
One of the best verses for that is of course Philippians 4:6,7. But there is another verse that encourages me and makes me bold and trusting the Lord. It’s Psalm 73:26 “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion for ever. ” Amen!! What do I have to fear?? Absolutely nothing. I just have to trust and position myself in obedience and dependence on Him rather than trusting in myself.

  35. Cheryl B says:

Be still (and know that) I AM GOD. Ps. 46:10 My part is to be still, God will do the rest.

  36. I feel like you are speaking directly to me!
I can’t wait for this to start. Thank you

  37. Valarie says:

When I’m feeling negative I love the words of Psalm 42, “Yet I will praise Him!

  38. Whenever I am in doubt or fear, I have a verse that calms my soul and brings me closer to Father God.
It is from Philippians 4:6-7. “Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses every man’s understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.”

I have found this verse is the antidote to fear, doubt and indecision. God is faithful to supply all His riches in Christ Jesus to us as we believe His Word.

  39. Melissa says:

    I really like Isaiah 43.

    “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
2 When you pass through the waters,
    I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
    you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.

And then THIS is really hopeful later on in the chapter:

    “Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past.
19 See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
    and streams in the wasteland.”

  40. Psalm 73:26 – “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

  41. Job 37:5-6 – “God’s voice is glorious in the thunder. We can’t even imagine the greatness of his power. He directs the snow to fall on the earth and tells the rain to pour down.”

Hebrews 10:23 – “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.”

  42. Thank you for this post, it spoke directly to my core. You are being used by Him to encourage peace in others, thank you!

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you: I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” ~Isaiah 41:10

  43. Thank you, I have those same thoughts dancing around my head a lot lately as I messed up so bad with friends, and I can’t forgive myself even as I hope and pray they are forgiving me. My go to verse is Jeremiah 29:11-13 mostly these days to try to keep life in perspective. And I ask God to help me find grace in his words so that I can forgive myself for messing up as I know He forgives me. Enjoyed your blog today. Thank you! 11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

  44. Love your post. Thank you for the encouragement always! God Bless

  46. I have been going through it and the scripture that calms my soul and thoughts is psalms 23 the lord is my Shepard . I say it over and over and I feel the peace of God I have it posted at my desk and say it all day when negative thoughts come in my mind

  47. Darlene says:

Thanks Sam for a wonderful post. My go to verse is Isaiah 43:1 “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. I know that no matter what happens He called me, He knows me by name and I am His. What more can I ask for? Can’t wait for the study.

The Scripture verse that comes to my mind that helps me is
Phillippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anythingbut in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving present your requests to God and the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. When I would wake up in the middle of the night I would start saying that verse and the other one was Psalm 139:23 Search me o God and know my heart test me and know my anxious thoughts.

God will help us to overcome all fears and worries 😀

  58. Stephanie M says:

I am really struggling with negative thoughts right now. It’s something that has been an on and off struggle my whole life, but recently it has really started to take over. I’ve gone through some difficult times over the past couple years and the negative thoughts just race in. I don’t know how to stop them. They are controlling my life. When I go to Bible I feel like it’s for someone else and not me. I’m desperate to change things but struggle to learn how. I know that per Romans 8:28 in all things God works for the good of those who love Him who have been called according to His purpose. I think I feel like I have knowledge but it’s not in my heart. So my prayer is that it will enter my heart.

    • Stephanie, that is my prayer for you too! I am standing with you sister (when two or more are gathered in His name) and asking God to help His Word and His Love go from your head way. down. deep. to your heart. He is faithful, He will do it!

  59. Jeremiah 29:11
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

  60. I am bookmarking this page to my favorites. Sometimes when I get filled with fear and anxiety I cannot even recall a scripture. I have had panic attacks for most of my life and I am now 57 yrs. old and when the bad ones come they consume me and I cannot think. I mean literally cannot think. What a wonderful place to come and just read one truth after another. To fill my heart with what God says and kick the enemy to the curb! Thank you!
When I typed the word consume it brought to mind Lamentations 3:22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. (I had to look this up and when I did I noticed verse 21 too)
Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope:
Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail.
They are new every morning: great is your faithfulness.
I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for Him.”
The Lord is good to those whose hope is in Him, to the one who seeks Him; Lamentations 3:21-25

  61. Charlotte says:

My personal favorite is Philippians 4:6-10. I won’t write it all here but I love how it says to take all those concerns and fears to the LORD but also what to replace those thoughts with. And God than promises that pure, holy, and an amazingly untroubled peace will guard your hearts and minds.

  62. Isaiah 26:3 You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.”
I’m so glad that even with our clumsy dances we go through in life, we don’t dance alone.

  63. Dawn Lucy says:

    I always like 2 Corinthians 10:5
    New International Version (NIV)
5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
As well as when I have a spirit of fear I like to claim 2 Timothy 1:7 and pray : “I will not have a spirit of fear or anxiety but I spirit of Power, Love and Sound Mind, in the name of Jesus. Also, when I have anxiety and need peace in my heart over a situation or over emotions like to Pray Psalm 23-
1 The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
    3 he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
    for his name’s sake.
    4 Even though I walk
    through the darkest valley,[a]
    I will fear no evil,
    for you are with me;
    your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
    You anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
    forever.

This brings me comfort in many situations, circumstances and emotions.

I hope this brings comfort to you and other. God Bless!!! Love in Christ!!!

  64. Candice Fassett says:

  66. Don’t be afraid, I’ve redeemed you.
I’ve called your name. You’re mine.
When you’re in over your head, I’ll be there with you.
When you’re in rough waters, you will not go down.
When you’re between a rock and a hard place,
    it won’t be a dead end –
Because I am God, your personal God,
The Holy of Israel, your Savior (Isaiah 43:1 MSG)

  67. Michelle Moodie says:

‘ All things are possible ..with God’ & ‘God keeps His promises’.

  68. I have danced with fear and anxiety and depression all of my 40+ years! I know my God personally and know He is able – it wasn’t until I hit rock bottom 2 weeks ago that I realized I haven’t been letting His truth about me and His promises really sink into my heart and soul. I thought I had faith and had it all together. Now, I am taking life one minute at a time and having to learn a new dance with my thoughts. A positive, God’s truth dance…….not what the world and satan want me to dance to. Thank you for all you do to help us stay sane until He comes back for us, His Children.

  69. Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

This scripture makes it so clear to me that no matter what is happening in my life, the physical pain and exhaustion that I am currently enduring, that there is a reason for it and that it will work together for good. God has a purpose for me and He will remove all obstacles to His will being done.

  70. Jahovah Rapha – restores and heals

Depression, stress, worry, He restores my mind, heart and spirit, heals my body, mind and heart!

  71. “All things are possible with Him….” ” I can do all things through Him who gives me strength….” “For we know that all things work together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose…”
These are some of my favorites. Thanks so much for this post!
